Community member, Don Gibson, asked Transportation Coordinator, Gail Payne, regarding the city's plan for handling delivery trucks in the event of a road diet (i.e., lane reduction) on Central Avenue. Here is her response:

Mr. Gibson,

Staff, including staff from the Police Department and City Attorney's Office, believe that there is a potential legal interpretation of vehicle code 21750 so that it is legal to use the center turn lane to safely overtake or pass another vehicle in the road. California Vehicle Code 21750 states:

21750.
(a) The driver of a vehicle overtaking another vehicle proceeding in the same direction shall pass to the left at a safe distance without interfering with the safe operation of the overtaken vehicle, subject to the limitations and exceptions set forth in this article.
(b) This section shall become operative on September 16, 2014.
