  1. Grab your Team 3 Utility Backpack that includes:

    • lantern (insert 3 AA batteries from bag, 3 AA extras included)
    • headlamp to affix to your hard hat (insert 3 AAA batteries from bag)
    • clipboard
    • paperwork
    • pen
    • wrench to shut off gas and water
    • crowbar to get in garbage enclosures

The lantern bottom unscrews to insert the AA batteries. The back of the headlamp is removable to insert the AAA batteries. The batteries are kept in a zip lock bag to avoid damaging the lantern and headlamp in the event of battery leakage during storage.

  2. Go to your Neighborhood Gathering place and meet your CERT leader. If no leader is present in your gathering place, check the other 3 sites until you find a CERT leader.

  3. At the gathering place, meet with other volunteers and divide up the duties.

duties

Duties

  • Assign Utility Team Buddy pairs to turn off gas in your neighborhood. To determine if gas needs to be turned off:

    • Check a meter in your area with an automatic earthquake shut-off feature.
    • If the quake was large enough to trigger that meter, then turn all non-automatic meters off.
    • Verify that all automatic meters are off.

Check off on the Gas Meter List for each Neighborhood that each meter is turned off.

  • Assign a Utility Team Buddy pair from the Lower Crown Neighborhood to turn off the water main.

  • Assign a Utility Team buddy pair from the Queens Road Neighborhood to check gates to be sure they can be opened if needed. See the Gate Release Document. Call Tom Burns if there is a problem.

  • Assign a Utility Team buddy pair from the Kings Road Neighborhood to open the CERT Shed, bring the wagon out with fire hoses, and leave it by the fire hydrant at the Queens/Kings intersection.

  • All teams should be available to assist with search and rescue if needed. Return to your Neighborhood Gathering place when not completing a task to be available for other duties. Let Team 1 Radio and Logistics know what you have completed so they can track that all necessary utilities have been turned off.

  • If your neighborhood does not have enough volunteers to do what you need to get done, contact other Neighborhood Gathering places for help. Especially let CERT member know if needed tasks have not been completed.
